The Biospecimen Bank intends to provide high-quality human tissue and correlating clinical information for the conduct of molecular genetic and proteomic research to investigator’s with IRB approval, with strict attention to patient privacy and prevention of breach of confidentiality.
After proper IRB documentation is provided, samples will be requested by completing the sample request template (PDF). If the samples requested are from the Biospecimen Bank general inventory collection and not collected prospectively for your own protocol, the request will be routed to the BSB Tissue Disbursement Committee (contact, e-mail of Mark.Lingen@uchospitals.edu).
Requesting Samples
Please fill out the tissue request template (PDF) and email the form to the following:
- New IRB requests should be sent to Leslie Martin: lmartin@bsdad.uchicago.edu
- Existing IRB sample requests to Leslie Martin: lmartin@bsdad.uchicago.edu
Once the request has been approved by Biospecimen Bank staff, the samples will be prepared for pickup. Each sample will be accompanied by a pathology report, a list of corresponding barcodes and sample annotations such as measurements, weights and preservation method.
Packaging for Shipment outside U of C
After appropriate documentation (IRB and MTA) is submitted, the Biospecimen Bank will package and ship to outside institutions. The DOT requires that anyone involved in the transport of hazardous materials (such as infectious substances, diagnostic specimens, genetically modified organisms, biological products, and dry ice) needs to comply with the Federal transportation law (49 CFR 172.700). We strictly adhere to all regulations in place for shipping of biohazardous materials. Shipments that require dry ice will only be send on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and will be shipped priority overnight.
